To test out of this course, you must successfully complete the following or demonstrate competency through equivalent
material in a portfolio.
1. Write a short position paper (3 to 5 pages) discussing the impact of the Internet on education, both real and
potential. Note, it may not always be positive. Include examples and citations supporting your argument and position.
2. Write a paper discussing the use of the Internet as a research tool. In this paper, describe a specific search
process you followed in searching for information to help you in your teaching. Include the strategy you used,
the results you obtained and the value of the Internet as a resource. Then describe how you would guide students
in using the Internet as a research tool. Include a sample lesson plan. Finally, conclude with a statement of your
position on the use of the Internet as a research tool. This paper should be 6 to 10 pages in length.
3. Write a 2 to 4 page position paper discussing how (and whether) you would assess online activities by students.
In the paper, identify why you would use assessments and how you would conduct them. Build a logical case for your
position, citing appropriate literature.
4. Select either option A or B, but not both.
A. Develop a preliminary plan that you could use within your school or district to obtain additional funding for Internet connectivity. Include in your plan what you want to fund, why it is important, possible sources of funding, and the basic components of a PR campaign. The plan should be 4 to 5 pages in length. Submit the plan to your instructor via e-mail.
B. Starting with the assumption that you have limited access to the Internet either by location or connection or number of connected computers. Describe the setting and develop a set of lesson plans that effectively incorporate student use of the Internet across a span of one to several weeks. In addition to the lesson plans, write a descriptive narrative that discusses why those plans make effective use of limited technology and what learning objectives they meet. Also discuss why you chose to meet those objectives using the Internet as a component of the activities. You may use the Lesson Plan form to help in the planning process if you like. Your plan and narrative should be at least 4 pages in length. Submit your plan and narrative to your instructor via e-mail.
