Module 1: Course Overview and Introduction to the Internet

The focus of this module is twofold:

Module 2: Conducting Research Online for Teaching and Learning

In the first module, we looked a the nature of the Internet and its history. We also explored, in a cursory way, some of the educational issues involved in using the Internet. In this module we begin the in-depth exploration of educational use. We start with research. Research is not simply accessing static information. It also includes the active participation in the generation of information. The Internet can support both approaches and we explore some of the issues in using the Internet both for static reference and access to discussion and opinion.

Module 3: The Internet and Assessment

Using the Internet as a source of information raises the issues of assessing student work based on that information. For the most part, the assessment issues are the same, regardless of the source of the information, though the Internet can make things a little more complex. However, the Internet also brings the opportunity to use the Internet to deliver assessment instruments -- have students take tests online or via e-mail, for example. But this opportunity has its own problems, or challenges. In this module, we examine both of these sets of distinct, though related issues.

Module 4: Funding, Dissemination, and What to Do with a Limited Connection

Throughout this course, to this point, we have been looking at a sort of idealized use of the Internet in education. We have tacitly assumed that what we were discussing was possible for everyone in all schools. Clearly this is not a reflection of the reality we all face. In this module, we take some time for a reality check, looking at the twin issues of funding and what to do when Internet connections are less than ideal.

Test Out Process

Like all of the courses in this certificate program, you have the option of testing out rather than going through all of the modules and assignments. To do so, you must meet all of the requirements for the course, successfully completing the activities listed to demonstrate competency in the course materials.
